Music without limits or compromises!
Katzenjammer is a multi-instrumentalist band from Norway consisting of Anne Marit Bergheim, Turid Jørgensen, Solveig Heilo and Marianne Sveen. The 5th unofficial member of the band is Mats Rybø, a singer-songwriter with The Making of Gentlemen, who collaborates with the band in the song-writing process. There’s also the 6th unofficial member of the band – a giant cat-faced grinning balalaika-bass called Akerø.
The band was formed in 2005, when Anne Marit decided to put all those instruments stuck in her basement to good use. She invited her music college mates Turid and Solveig to join her for a tune or two. Marianne joined them a bit later and the ground-shaking and leg-breaking phenomenon of a band called Katzenjammer was born!
The name “Katzenjammer” – despite its definition in English dictionaries as “cats’ wail” and in German dictionaries as – plainly – a “hangover”, was actually taken from an American comic strip called “Katzenjammer Kids”. The band often say that they very much identify with the behaviour of the kids from this comic strip, who constantly play tricks on others, misbehaving and inventing various ways of escaping the boring world of adults. This mischievous behaviour, the ability to be in touch with the child inside of us and a complete refusal to be limited in any way by any means – be that musical, mental or physical – lie at the heart of Katzenjammer.
The band now has 30 instruments to their name, playing which they’ve mastered to the extent where these girls switch between the guitar, banjo, keyboard, glockenspiel, the kazoo, drums, bass-balalaika and accordion with the same ease as they switch between the trumpet, mandolin, tuba, harmonica, zither, ukulele and domra – to name just a few.
On stage, Katzenjammer play a version of musical chairs, where the instruments change hands for every song, so – effectively – it’s a band without a front person, as every member *IS* the front person at various points throughout the gig.
Where most bands have a “music style per band” approach, Katzenjammer do not only narrow it down to a “music style per song” approach, but also create a rich mixture of sounds stemming from various cultures, styles and eras. The most distinctive feature of the band is its versatility. The band consists of four talented musicians who – despite being able to read each other’s minds – stay true to their inner selves and thus bring the depth and breadth of their personal musical experience, influences and tastes to the table.
Small wonder then that besides their common project – which is Katzenjammer – Marianne Sveen and Solveig Heilo also have their own solo projects “on the side”. Marianne’s project is called Dandylion and she has released Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 of her debut album called “Images Under Construction”. Sol Heilo has recently released a single covering SBTRKT’s original “Hold On”.
Since 2005, Katzenjammer have played thousands of gigs, a good couple of hundreds of festivals, including Eurosonic, Glastonbury, South by Southwest, Bonnaroo, Hurricane, Rockslide amongst others. They have also extensively toured Europe, the United States and Australia. They are a household name not only in their native country Norway, but also in Germany and other European countries… and we want them to be a household name across the universe!
